No details are available about Mr. Shafa'i's arrest and detention. He was arrested in fall of 1981, and was detained in Evin prison. According to the Mojahedin Khalq web site, he was tortured and his wife was pressured for a confession. According to the same web site, “When they were frustrated and unable to crush him, they gave him a book named “People’s Hypocrites Against the People” and then set him in front of other prisoners for a debate. He showed them the book and said: “They gave me this book to read so I could debate. Do you think there could be a debate between the executioner and the victim?” Then, he showed the marks of torture on his feet and said: “They couldn’t get results by torture. What debate can we have with them? The first condition for debate is to put aside torture. Our first question is why do you torture people in prison?”
